History[]

Garry's Mod started out as a source mod for Half-Life 2. It allowed the player to use any of the characters in-game and in the workshop. As time went on, GMod became its own individual game, and would later be sold on Steam for $9.99. Due to Steam having a workshop function for its games, the Workshop was implemented in place of the Toybox.

Workshop[]

The Workshop allows people to submit models, Props, Maps and more and have others subscribe to them; an alternative term to downloading. So far, there are thousands of addons on the workshop. Many of these include addons originate from pop culture, listed below:

  • Super Mario
  • Halo
  • The Walking Dead
  • Cry of Fear
  • Five Nights at Freddy's
  • Undertale
  • Bendy and the Ink Machine
  • Team Fortress 2
  • Half-Life 2
  • Portal 2
  • Roblox Nico's Nextbots

Other notable addons are weapons, such as the M9K Weapons, GBombs and Trouble in Terrorist Town and vehicles. SCars originally innovated on the Vehicles of GMod, featuring full customization on the vehicles themselves. TDMCars would also lead the way, for ported models from various games.

Another feature was the ability to add scripts, like VCmod, a lighting script for various vehicles across the workshop. These scripts were mostly on Coderhire until it went defunct and script sellers had to move another site, Script Fodder. You can currently find the GMod scripts there. The current version of Garry's Mod is version 13 (GMod 13), which still receives regular updates via Steam. An older, unsupported version, 9.0.4, is available as a free download at download.com among other places. It requires at least one Source Engine game in the user's account to play and therefore is offered in a reduced-price bundle with Counter-Strike: Source for those who do not meet that criteria.

Gameplay[]

Players can create and interact with NPCs, ragdolls, and props in a variety of ways, such as lifting, rotating and freezing them in place with the Physics Gun. The various limbs of the Ragdoll can also be manipulated. The tool gun is a multi-purpose item used for tasks such as welding and melding Props together and changing the facial expression of a Ragdoll.
